Today is officially Flying Ant Day – in West Sussex anyway; as Meg noted, London had its visitation (or, more correctly, exodus) 5 days ago. I had noticed that the ants under our patio seemed to be getting a bit hyperactive this morning, and now I am beginning to see the winged versions making an appearance. Of course, since I am working in the garden today (the joys of wifi!), I am probably going to be covered in the little buggers…
Update: Those of you of a more pedantic nature might like to know that we had a second visitation on the 21st July…
Update: As James noted in the comments, we had yet another mass exodus today (26th) as well…

Update on London flying ants – we have a second swarm here in London today, Wed 26 July (at least in SE14 – anyone know how localised these things are?)

yesterday was portsmouth’s turn and having watched this annual event happen for several years now finally decided to google it and this site came up. All I know is that is nearly always a humid, muggy day. A givaway that the ants are out is the flocks of seagulls and other birds circling around in a ariel feast.

August 7 appears to be Official Flying Ant Day in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA! I’ve never seen these things before, and I’ve lived here almost all my life. Maybe I just haven’t been paying attention!
